The darkness fades behind me as I walk into the sun
The warmth revives my limbs until I feel the strength to run
Claws from there behind reach out and try to pull me back
But out here is full color and I won't return to black
Screams fade into whispers fade to memories fade to gone
Death has been forgotten, into life I have been drawn
The darkness fades behind me and the sunlight shines above
I knew if I kept going, someday I'd walk into love

Deliverance
Rope burns on my palms and neck
Those behind beg don't let go
Uphill the entire trek
Each step painfully slow
Put in front to hold the line
Because I know the way
But pace is slow and fault is mine
Because I lead the fray
Progress slows when those behind
Start digging in their heel
They fear I may be blind
And they give in to what they feel
Two steps forward, one to rear
Wish someone else could lead
Those behind curse in my ear
Throw stones until I bleed
It should have been a simple quest
With only one design
Deliver this crowd to the crest
Where we can all resign
If those behind would step with me
If we could share the weight
How speedy our ascent would be
The distance not so great
But those behind fight, one and all
The climb to liberty
I'll cut the rope and let them fall
And just deliver me
Those behind beg don't let go
Uphill the entire trek
Each step painfully slow
Put in front to hold the line
Because I know the way
But pace is slow and fault is mine
Because I lead the fray
Progress slows when those behind
Start digging in their heel

Against the Odds
Born to dirt and sweat and tears
In anger, desperation, fears
Among the lower life on earth
A little known or cared for birth
Against the odds just wait and see
When you least expect it, there I'll be
Reared in bitterness, angst, and hate
Raised to accept a sorry fate
With acquaintances but no friend
Brought up for a lowly end
Against the odds someday you'll see
You'll never expect it, but there I'll be
Awakened now to freedom's sound
The world no longer flat but round
I break the prison bars of safe
Resounding voices of warning chafe
Fight the odds and wake like me
You wouldn't expect it, but there I'll be
Open your eyes and break the spell
Walk out of your desperate hell
Don't settle for the chains you built
Get out of bed, get out of guilt
Beat the odds and expose the scam
You didn't expect it, but here I am
In anger, desperation, fears
Among the lower life on earth
A little known or cared for birth
Against the odds just wait and see
When you least expect it, there I'll be
Reared in bitterness, angst, and hate

I Wonder Where God Went
My time is up, the money's spent
I wonder where God went
The sun shines blue, the fire's cold
All I have that's new is old
Each success in succession failed
Every bright spot now has paled
All that I did right was wrong
The happiest music to the saddest song
My feet are tired, my back is bent
I wonder where God went
I defend against my dearest friends
The greatest opportunities yield dead ends
I stop to rest in the middle of the race
I'll never win if I keep up the pace
199?
